This Friday’s CrossFit Total will be my 3rd or 4th one in my two years at CrossFit I35. The first time I ever went I was pretty intimidated, but it’s no big deal, SERIOUSLY. I’m not a competitive person when it comes to sports, particularly CrossFit at my age and place in life, and particularly since my training has stunk for the past couple months because of a bum shoulder (and using it as a great excuse to do nothing!).
CrossFit Total is cool, especially the way we do it at CrossFit I35. The Total itself is your maximum effort in three lifts: high bar back squat, overhead strict press and deadlift. I personally think MOST normal people sandbag most of their training, especially the lifts, so it’s really cool to get under (or over) some big-ass weight and see what you’re made of.
It takes commitment, resolve and confidence. And, I’ll be honest, you’ll feel pretty badass for a while after.
There is a sense of competition, but it’s really about you against yourself than you competing against other box members, really. If you’re freaked out by competition or etc, don’t worry. Come and do the Total and I think you’ll enjoy it.
I recommend that most people also don’t train earlier in the day, or if you do keep it light and easy like a recovery workout (a jog, a walk, some LIGHT weights, etc). If you’ve never done a Total before AND you don’t sandbag it and truly find your one-rep maxes for those three lifts you won’t believe how tired (not sore, just wiped out) you’ll feel for the next day or so. It’s crazy, but that’s your nervous system un-frying itself!
And, to make it even cooler, CrossFit I35 grills out and turns it into a party, so you lift heavy and then you socialize and get to hang out. What’s not to like about that?
If you’re on the fence about coming to the Total party, PLEASE make an effort to at least stop by, it’s really awesome and that’s coming from the least competitive, please-don’t-look-at-me-when-I-train guy in the WORLD. Even I think it’s cool, so I hope to see you there! I’ll be doing the deadlift (could go either way, but won’t be a PR) and the squat (which will be horrible) but for my shoulder’s sake, no overhead press.
