My husband Chuck talked me into joining CrossFit I-35 with him after he had been going for about 3 months. It took a bit of convincing. I couldn’t do ANYTHING when I first started and I had never even heard some of the CrossFit jargon before. YouTube became my friend as I’d check out videos of how to do movements after the WOD was posted for the following day. I couldn’t do a single pull up, a toe-to-bar or RX a WOD. Now I can do 6 strict pull-ups and 24 kipping pull-ups. I can also string together toe-to-bars and I can RX 75%+ of the WODs. When I started my second year, I set the goals to be able to do ring dips, handstand push-ups, and a 200+ lb. deadlift. I achieved all of those before my 2nd anniversary. My current goals are handstand walk, butterfly pull-ups, and muscle-ups. I’ve also added running to the end of my WODs to improve my cardiovascular endurance. As an athlete in high school, I have always valued fitness. After having kids, I put my own health on the back burner, spending all of my time volunteering and being involved with my kids. Now I still volunteer but I also see the value in being a model for fitness and healthy eating for my kids. When I first began, my main hesitation was that I would look stupid in class. I stayed in the back row of every class so that no one would pay attention to me. The biggest obstacle I face now is the time commitment. I have two school-aged kids who have various activities, I work full-time, and I have a house to maintain. It helps that I have always been allowed to bring my kids with me to class. As a nurse working 12-hour shifts, I am unable to come to the gym on days that I work. My husband is a level 1 certified trainer for CrossFit I-35 which helps me stay consistent with workouts at home when I can’t come in. The people at CrossFit I-35 have become a second family. The community there is very close and I feel supported inside and outside of our gym life. I definitely have much more confidence in myself now! I love that I get compliments almost every day on my appearance, from friends, and from strangers! I am also wearing a pant size that I have never worn in my life, even though I weigh the same. I have also drastically reduced my genetically high cholesterol.
